The Great Sioux War
The Great Sioux War was a conflict between the United States and the Lakota Sioux people that lasted from 1876 to 1877. The war began when gold was discovered in the Black Hills of South Dakota, which were part of the Lakota's traditional territory. The US government demanded that the Lakota cede the Black Hills, but the Lakota refused. In response, the US government sent troops into the Black Hills to force the Lakota to comply.
The Great Sioux War was a brutal conflict that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Lakota people. One of the most notorious incidents of the war was the Battle of Little Bighorn, in which a Lakota and Cheyenne force led by Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull defeated the US 7th Cavalry led by George Armstrong Custer. The Battle of Little Bighorn was a major victory for the Lakota, but it also led to a crackdown by the US government that ultimately resulted in the defeat of the Lakota and the loss of their traditional lands.
The Baltimore Riots
The Baltimore Riots were a series of violent disturbances that occurred in Baltimore, Maryland, in July 1877. The riots were sparked by the death of a railroad worker in a collision between a train and a National Guard unit. The riots quickly spread throughout the city, and soon mobs of white people were attacking black people, their homes, and businesses.
The Baltimore Riots were some of the worst race riots in American history. Hundreds of people were killed, and thousands more were injured. The riots also caused extensive property damage, and many black people were forced to flee their homes.
Robert Bruce
Robert Bruce was a white settler who became infamous for his brutal attacks on Native Americans. Bruce was born in Scotland in 1837, and he emigrated to the United States in 1854. He settled in Dakota Territory, where he became a farmer and a rancher.
Bruce was a strong supporter of white supremacy, and he believed that Native Americans were inferior to white people. He frequently attacked Native Americans, and he was known for his cruelty and violence. In 1877, Bruce led a group of white settlers in a massacre of Lakota people at Wounded Knee Creek. The Wounded Knee Massacre was one of the most notorious atrocities of the Great Sioux War.
Bruce was eventually captured and tried for his crimes. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. He was executed in 1879.
Legacy of Violence
The violence of 1877 left a lasting legacy of hatred and division in the United States. The Great Sioux War and the Baltimore Riots were both major turning points in American history, and they helped to shape the nation's attitudes towards race and violence.
Today, the legacy of 1877 can still be seen in the United States. The Great Sioux War and the Baltimore Riots are still remembered as some of the most violent and divisive events in American history. And the issue of race remains a major source of tension and conflict in the United States today.
