Attack on Pearl Harbor: A Ranger in Time
The Story of 12
On December 7, 1941, the United States Navy base at Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The attack resulted in the deaths of over 2,400 Americans and the sinking or damaging of 19 U.S. Navy ships.
One of the survivors of the attack was a young Navy petty officer named Lester Tenney. Tenney was a member of the security force at Pearl Harbor and was on duty at the time of the attack. He witnessed the Japanese planes flying overhead and the bombs exploding all around him. Tenney was eventually wounded in the attack, but he managed to escape and make his way to safety.

Tenney's story is one of heroism and survival. He is one of the few people who witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor firsthand, and his account of that day is a valuable historical record.
The Attack
Tenney was on duty at the security gate at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese planes attacked. He saw the planes flying overhead and realized that they were Japanese. He tried to warn the other guards, but it was too late. The Japanese planes began dropping bombs all around them.
Tenney was knocked unconscious by one of the bombs. When he woke up, he found himself lying in a ditch. He was bleeding from a head wound, but he was alive.
Tenney got up and started running. He ran towards the nearest building, which was the barracks. He made it to the barracks and went inside. He found a group of other survivors and they all huddled together for safety.
The Japanese planes continued to bomb Pearl Harbor for another hour. Tenney and the other survivors stayed in the barracks until the bombing stopped.
The Aftermath
After the bombing stopped, Tenney and the other survivors went outside. They saw that the base had been devastated. The ships were sunk or damaged, and the buildings were destroyed.
Tenney and the other survivors were taken to a nearby hospital. Tenney was treated for his head wound and released from the hospital the next day.
Tenney was one of the lucky ones. He survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, but many of his friends and fellow sailors did not.
The Legacy
The attack on Pearl Harbor was a turning point in American history. It led the United States to enter World War II. The war lasted for four years and resulted in the deaths of millions of people.
