The United States of America was founded on the principles of individual liberty, limited government, and the rule of law. However, over the past century, the federal government has grown increasingly centralized, encroaching on the powers of states and individuals. This centralization of power has led to a number of problems, including:

  • The erosion of individual rights and freedoms
  • The growth of a massive, unaccountable bureaucracy
  • The decline of local control and self-governance
  • The accumulation of unsustainable levels of debt
  • The erosion of the rule of law

The centralized government stranglehold on America is a serious threat to our liberty and prosperity. It is essential that we take action to resist this trend and restore the balance of power between the federal government, the states, and the people.

Causes of Centralization

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the centralization of government in America. These include:

  • The growth of the welfare state
  • The rise of the national security state
  • The decline of civic engagement
  • The increasing power of the federal judiciary

The growth of the welfare state has led to a massive increase in the size and scope of the federal government. In 1900, the federal government spent less than 3% of GDP. By 2020, that number had grown to over 20% of GDP. This growth in spending has been driven by the creation of new entitlement programs, such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

The rise of the national security state has also contributed to the centralization of government. Since the Cold War, the federal government has spent trillions of dollars on defense and intelligence programs. This spending has created a vast bureaucracy that is largely unaccountable to the American people.

The decline of civic engagement has also played a role in the centralization of government. In the past, Americans were more likely to be involved in their local communities and volunteer their time to help others. However, in recent decades, civic engagement has declined significantly. This has made it easier for the federal government to expand its power without facing opposition.

Finally, the increasing power of the federal judiciary has contributed to the centralization of government. In recent decades, the Supreme Court has issued a number of rulings that have expanded the power of the federal government at the expense of the states and individuals. These rulings have made it more difficult for states to challenge federal laws and have given the federal government more power to regulate the economy and social life.

Consequences of Centralization

The centralization of government in America has had a number of negative consequences. These include:

  • The erosion of individual rights and freedoms
  • The growth of a massive, unaccountable bureaucracy
  • The decline of local control and self-governance
  • The accumulation of unsustainable levels of debt
  • The erosion of the rule of law

The centralization of government has led to the erosion of individual rights and freedoms. The federal government now has the power to regulate almost every aspect of our lives, from what we eat and drink to what we say and do. This has led to a decrease in individual autonomy and an increase in government control.

The centralization of government has also led to the growth of a massive, unaccountable bureaucracy. The federal government now employs over 2 million people, and this number is growing every year. This bureaucracy is largely unaccountable to the American people and is often unresponsive to the needs of citizens.
