The Brian Hughes Case
The Brian Hughes case was one of the most challenging cases of Mallin's career. Hughes, a 23-year-old aspiring actor, was found dead in his car on March 17, 1984. The car had been set on fire, and Hughes had been shot 16 times. The police initially ruled the death a suicide, but Mallin believed otherwise.
Mallin began his investigation by talking to Hughes' family and friends. He learned that Hughes had been in a relationship with a woman named Karen Greenberger, and that they had broken up shortly before Hughes' death. Mallin also learned that Greenberger had a history of mental illness and had been known to make threats against Hughes.
Mallin's investigation eventually led him to Greenberger's ex-boyfriend, John Ray. Ray had a history of violence, and he had been seen arguing with Hughes on the night of the murder. Mallin also learned that Ray had access to a gun.
Mallin arrested Ray and charged him with Hughes' murder. Ray was convicted of the crime and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
