The Story

The novel begins with the death of Eleanor Bennett, a Jamaican matriarch who has spent her life baking black cakes for her family and friends. After her death, her children gather at her home to read her will and to share her final wishes. Eleanor's will reveals that she has left a black cake for each of her children, with instructions to eat it on the day of her funeral.

As the siblings begin to eat their cakes, they are transported back in time to their childhoods. They remember the happy times they spent with their mother, as well as the difficult times they faced together. Through these memories, they come to understand their mother's struggles and sacrifices, and they begin to appreciate the love that she always had for them.
