The story begins with Tom and his father, Tom Swift Sr., working on a new invention in their laboratory. They are interrupted by a strange flying object that lands in their backyard. Tom and his father investigate and find a young alien named Shan. Shan explains that he is from the planet X and that he has come to Earth to learn about human culture.

In the end, Shan decides to stay on Earth. He believes that he can learn more about human culture and help to bring peace and understanding between Earth and his home planet.
