Offwithhishead's music was a mix of noise, punk, and post-rock. The band's songs were often characterized by their dissonant guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and shouted vocals. Offwithhishead's lyrics were often dark and introspective, dealing with themes of love, loss, and mental illness.
Offwithhishead released four studio albums and toured extensively throughout their career. The band's music was praised by critics and fans alike, and the band was often compared to other experimental rock bands such as The Birthday Party, Swans, and Sonic Youth.
In 2015, Offwithhishead announced that they were disbanding. The band's final album, "Clear Night," was released in 2016. Since then, the band's members have gone on to pursue other projects.
The following is an oral history of Offwithhishead, told through the words of its members and fans.
The Early Years
Ryan Leonard (guitar, vocals): I grew up in a small town in the West Country of England. I was always interested in music, but I didn't really start playing guitar until I was about 16. I was into punk and hardcore, and I started playing in bands when I was at college.
Steve Winnard (drums): I grew up in Bristol. I started playing drums when I was about 12. I was into punk and metal, and I played in a few bands when I was at school.
Lawrie Malcom (bass): I grew up in Bristol. I started playing bass when I was about 15. I was into punk and indie rock, and I played in a few bands when I was at college.
The three of us met at a party in Bristol in 2005. We started talking about music, and we realized that we had a lot in common. We decided to start a band, and we called ourselves Offwithhishead.
Ryan: We started out playing covers of songs by our favorite bands, but we quickly started writing our own material. We wanted to create something that was different and challenging. We didn't want to be just another punk or hardcore band.
Steve: Our early songs were very noisy and experimental. We were influenced by bands like The Birthday Party, Swans, and Sonic Youth. We wanted to create a sound that was both visceral and cathartic.
Lawrie: We started playing gigs around Bristol, and we quickly gained a following. We were known for our intense live performances. We would often play for hours, and we would often end up covered in blood and sweat.
The Debut Album
Ryan: In 2007, we released our debut album, "Home." The album was a critical and commercial success. It was praised for its originality and intensity.
Steve: The album was recorded in a studio in Bristol. We had a very limited budget, so we had to be creative. We used a lot of found sounds and experimental techniques.
Lawrie: The album was very personal to us. We wrote songs about our own experiences of love, loss, and mental illness. We wanted to create an album that was both cathartic and challenging.
The Second Album
Ryan: In 2009, we released our second album, "Twin." The album was a more polished and refined affair than our debut. It was still noisy and experimental, but it was also more melodic and accessible.
Steve: We recorded the album in a studio in London. We had a bigger budget this time, so we were able to experiment with more sounds and techniques.
Lawrie: The album was well-received by critics and fans. It was praised for its originality and maturity. We started to tour more extensively, and we played at some of the biggest festivals in the world.
The Third Album
Ryan: In 2012, we released our third album, "Constant." The album was a more experimental and challenging affair than our previous albums. It was full of dissonant guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and shouted vocals.
Steve: We recorded the album in a studio in Bristol. We had a lot of freedom this time, and we were able to experiment with more extreme sounds and techniques.
Lawrie: The album was divisive among critics and fans. Some people praised it for its originality and intensity, while others found it to be too noisy and inaccessible.
The Final Album
Ryan: In 2015, we released our fourth and final album, "Clear Night." The album was a return to the more melodic and accessible sound of our second album. It was also our most personal album, with songs about love, loss, and redemption.
Steve: We recorded the album in a studio in Bristol. We had a lot of time and resources this time, and we were able to create our most ambitious and fully realized album.
Lawrie: The album was well-received by critics and fans. It was praised for its beauty, maturity, and emotional depth. We toured extensively in support of the album, and we played some of the best shows of our career.
The End
Ryan: In 2016, we announced that we were disbanding. We had been through a lot together, and we had achieved everything we had set out to do. We felt that it was time to move on.
Steve: The decision to break up was difficult, but it was the right one. We are all still friends, and we are all proud of what we achieved together.
Lawrie: Offwithhishead was a unique and special band. We created something that was truly different and challenging. We hope that our music will continue to inspire and challenge people for years to come.
